Saturday 29/11/08

I had a sleep-in, as a few of us are starting to get a cold. After breakfast/lunch we caught the subway downtown to lower Manhattan to do a bit of sight-seeing. First stop was the World Trade Center site, also known as Ground Zero. The area was huge and being surrounded by fencing, you were unable to see into the actual site. We went to the Tribute WTC Visitor Center to have a look at the gallery. It was such an amazing experience. A sad one and a realisation of just how big the impact of the attack was for families and friends of victims, as well as the local community and the country as a whole. Inside the gallery, it described the event step by step with video footage, audio recorded from the day and photographs. On display were items found in the wreckage, including a fire fighters uniform, a window frame from one of the planes, ID cards of workers at the Trade Centers and more. It was a really emotional experience but one that I’ll never forget and am glad I got the chance to see and do. I feel for the families and friends of victims and the people of New York City and hope that one day we can find peace on this earth so disasters like 9/11 never happen again.

After the experience of the gallery we went to get a drink and had a sit for a minute to take in everything we had seen and felt. We then walked down to Battery Park and could see the Statue of Liberty. We decided to take the Staten Island Ferry, which goes past the Statue of Liberty, so we could get photos and a closer look. When we got to Staten Island we went to a small coffee shop, I had the best hot chocolate there and a delicious choc chip muffin. It was so good. We then jumped back on the ferry and caught it back to Manhattan, and onto the subway to go home.
